Microsoft has a passion for helping and igniting the diverse communities in which we live and work. From their Annual Giving Campaign to matching employees' gifts of time and money, Microsoft's employees make an impact in their communities daily. Microsoft and its employees contribute to their communities by bringing information technology to people and organizations. Through their efforts, they create an environment that fosters diversity & inclusion and a sense of belonging. Microsoft has diversity & inclusion strategic initiatives that represent their mission to “Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more”.

The Challenge

Studies have found that less than 10% of companies use their community involvement programs to drive employee engagement. Companies that are not socially responsible or strong advocates of community involvement have lower engagement levels than companies that are actively supporting their communities. When employees are disengaged, it creates a disconnected and less inclusive environment.

The Solution

Our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) determined that through collaborative experiences where there is a sense of belonging, you can capture the essence of peoples' authenticity. We noted that you can only change the behavior of a culture when people are comfortable being their true selves. We began to understand human needs to connect and have a sense of belonging and what enables true behavioral change. Engagement within the community increased by 40% due to cognitive diversity and culturally relevant topics that were discussed during the live and virtual events. Collaboration among peers was also heightened due to the engaged community we cultivated built on authenticity and transparency.

After a momentous run of engaging in-person events, it came to a screeching halt. "Due to Covid-19" (a phrase many of us are no strangers to hearing) paused our efforts temporarily on our mission to bridge the gap between culture and corporate. During quarantine, we realized an important factor that organizations were not tapping into - Inclusion and Diversity. But most importantly, the fundamental human needs. It wasn't until the world stopped that we truly paid attention to human needs inside corporate. These components are the driving factors for high performance and retention. This was the game-changer for us that launched our strategy to the next level.

The Results

We partnered with Microsoft and F45 to hold a physical & mental health workshop for the community through a series we called "Health Is Wealth". First, we hosted a panel at Microsoft covering topics that aren’t discussed in corporate settings at the level they need to be discussed and addressed. We allowed the panelists to share their authentic stories, which increases engagement and encourages authenticity from the audience, who then shared their candid feedback during Q&A. During the workshop, the expert panelists shared their unique perspectives on health, working out, setting goals, the importance of mental health, and how giving back correlates to an individuals' purpose and social responsibility.

At the workshop, the attendees were given tickets to attend a new workout session at F45 called “North Hollywood”, led by Taylor Cummings. This session incorporated special workouts to get the energy flowing in an environment that motivated you to work as hard as possible for 45 minutes.

F45 has a unique training method with a max of 4 trainers to 20-30 individuals during any given class. There are 4 screens in the workout space that virtually demonstrates the workout that should be completed at your station. This allows the trainers to work with individuals on an as-needed basis to support more people at once. Each individual participating in the workout has their own challenges, comfort levels, experience levels, and learning curves.

The trainers at F45 can adapt and tailor themselves to suit the needs of each individuals' challenges. The trainers demonstrate that they understand and accept the differences between others. When understanding the differences between individuals, the trainers can create an inclusive culture where everyone has a sense of belonging and can embrace each other's differences. This leads to individuals’ being comfortable
